Michigan Plaza Earns LEED Platinum Green Building Certification

Chicago, IL | August 07, 2017

CHICAGO – August 7, 2017 – Michigan Plaza LLC, building ownership, and MB Real Estate (MBRE), the exclusive leasing and management company for Michigan Plaza, announced that Michigan Plaza, a two- building complex located at 205/225 North Michigan Avenue, has achieved LEED Platinum certification in the Existing Building Operations and Maintenance category as specified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED Platinum represents the highest designation in the internationally recognized green building certification program. Michigan Plaza received LEED Gold certification in 2012 and is two of 14 buildings in the Chicagoland area to have achieved LEED Platinum status.

Michigan Plaza’s LEED Platinum certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO, and founding chair of the USGBC. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than before, and Michigan Plaza serves as a prime example of just how much we can accomplish.”

According to MBRE’s Steve Hennessy, senior vice president and general manager of Michigan Plaza, “Building ownership’s continued commitment to capital improvements and sustainability has led to some of the lowest occupancy costs in the city and ultimately to the LEED Platinum designation.” Michigan Plaza received the LEED Platinum designation without purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates for extra points which do not benefit the asset itself. Hennessy credits the success of the project to Mark Szewczyk, Michigan Plaza’s operations manager, who holds considerable expertise in sustainable building performance.

To better serve tenants and the Chicago community, Michigan Plaza implemented effective and trackable solutions aimed at improving the buildings’ overall energy performance and efficiency. Such measures included conducting building retrofits, ongoing commissioning of energy systems, rigorous monitoring of recycling practices, and encouraging tenants to take part in the initiative.

Located in the East Loop, Michigan Plaza was designed by Fujikawa Johnson & Associates and offers modern amenities, such as a 10,000-square foot fitness center, 4,500-square foot conference center, emergency child care facility, entrance to the East Loop pedway, as well as indoor access to more than 25 restaurants. The complex is undergoing a major lobby renovation that will include a new collaboration lounge and “pop-up” restaurant, as well as an event space that will be completed this Fall.
