SVP & Director of Operations & General Councel

  • BIOGRAPHY

Katherine Lula has been with MB Real Estate since 2014 and was appointed senior vice president and director of operations in August of 2021. Lula started in building management, and eventually became MBRE’s go-to legal expert. From 2016 to 2021, Lula served as MBRE’s risk manager and legal counsel. Lula has been a significant influence on the shape and success of the company and she continues to have a prominent influence as MBRE’s general counsel and a member of the company’s Executive Committee.

Starting in 2007, Lula gained firsthand experience working first as a law clerk and then as a litigation attorney in the areas of real estate, personal injury, and insurance defense litigation. She earned her law degree in 2012 at the University of Iowa and served as an editor on the law review. As a litigation attorney in Chicago before joining MBRE, Lula drafted complaints, coordinated discovery, oversaw commercial foreclosures, and argued contested motions.

In 2014, Lula was a part of the property team at the Inland Steel building, managed by MBRE. At Inland Steel, Lula worked closely with tenants on the day-to-day level and leveraged a background in law to assist with leases and contracts. When Lula left Inland Steel, she took on a larger role within MBRE, using her law background to assist the company with risk management while also working closely with the Department of Asset Management—leading Lula to gain an even broader knowledge of MBRE’s portfolio and the commercial real estate industry at large. In 2020, Lula was elevated to MBRE’s risk manager and legal counsel. From 2016 through 2020, Lula was responsible for maintaining property and liability insurance, managing litigation and insurance claims, reviewing key contracts for MBRE’s various business units, assisting MBRE business units with negotiations related to contracts, and addressing all other legal, insurance, and liability matters within the company.

As general counsel, Lula continues to use her expertise to protect MBRE and foster a thriving and trusting environment for employees. As the director of operations, Lula is a liaison and advocate for MBRE’s support services and is vital to the company’s continued well-being and growth.
